People First: Terrence “Bud” Crawford
North Omaha’s own Bud Crawford is more than a national boxing champion—he’s a hometown hero. Beyond his accomplishments in the ring, Crawford is creating lasting impact through the B&B Sports Academy. The Academy fosters a culture of discipline, respect, and inclusivity for Omaha’s youth, empowering boys and girls to rise through mentorship, athletics, and community.
Leadership First: The North 24th Street BID Project
Led by LaVonya Goodwin, President of the 24th Street Business Improvement District (BID) Board, this initiative is helping reinvigorate one of North Omaha’s most historic corridors. From new business investments to the preservation of cultural landmarks, the BID project is laying the foundation for economic revitalization while honoring the legacy of the area.
Nonprofits First: City Sprouts
City Sprouts is transforming the local food landscape by promoting urban agriculture and equitable food access. With educational programs, hands-on gardening experiences, a 24/7 community fridge and pantry, and partnerships with other nonprofits, City Sprouts is addressing food insecurity while strengthening community bonds and championing sustainable practices.
People First: Alex Jochim of Benson First Friday
What began as a small volunteer-led art walk has evolved into Benson First Friday (BFF)—a thriving nonprofit founded by Alex Jochim. BFF is dedicated to showcasing local artists and expanding access to creative events. Through its inclusive programming and ever-growing footprint, BFF has become a cornerstone of community expression in the Benson neighborhood.
Business First: Needles & Nailzz
Founded by Quincy Hughes, Needles & Nailzz is more than a tattoo and nail studio—it’s a cultural haven. Known for its creative fusion of personal style and community collaboration, the studio fosters a space where artists and clients alike feel empowered to express themselves. Inclusivity, education, and artistic freedom are at the core of this flourishing local business.
Sports First: International Martial Arts Exchange
In a powerful display of cross-cultural connection, B&B Sports Academy partnered with the Omaha Sister Cities Association and the Butler-Gast YMCA to host students from the Kenyunjuku Karate School in Shizuoka, Japan. North Omaha youth had the unique opportunity to train alongside their Japanese peers, building bridges through martial arts and cultural exchange.
